Tension Headaches and Migraines
In the United States alone, more then 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches or migraines. This disorder can have a drastic effect on your quality of life. Migraines typically result from high stress levels and/or lack of sleep.
Being proactive is the best approach to massage treatment when it comes to migraines. Having massages performed on a regular basis helps the body maintain an optimal level of balance and stress relief. This approach significantly reduces the chances of a migraine attack or tension headache by keeping the muscles in balance.
If you are in the acute stage of a migraine, massage is done to ease the symptoms by focusing on the neck, shoulders, and head. This approach has been effective in treating someone who is currently experiencing a migraine or tension headache.
A recent study showed that clients who regularly received massages had a lower occurrence of migraines than participants that did not receive massage therapy, as well as having improved quality of sleep. Another study found adults who regularly received massages showed a decrease in the occurrence of sleep disturbances, headaches, and distress symptoms. It also showed an increase in serotonin levels, which are directly related to mood and quality of sleep.
