Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get a massage?

Just like when you get the oil changed and the tires rotated regularly on your car, it’s important to focus on your body’s needs. Yes, exercise is taking care of your body, but you also need to address the muscles, connective tissue and joints that are keeping you moving. Complete the circle: train hard, eat well, get sleep, and get bodywork to keep your body running well for as long as possible.

At least one bodywork session a month is ideal for the weekend warrior athlete looking for routine maintenance and to remain injury-free. If you have a chronic issue, once a week for at least 3-4 weeks will get you back on track toward a better functioning body that’s prepared for whatever you need.

How soon after an injury should I schedule an appointment with Optimal Function & Wellness for treatment?

When you have a new (acute) injury, it’s important to take care of it as soon as possible so that you don’t let a new dysfunctional movement pattern in your body set in around that injury.  Your first action should be to get a medical diagnosis before treating the injury.

When using massage for treatment of common injuries, we have the most success when we work immediately with the injury to help prevent the soft tissue surrounding the affected area from initiating a dysfunctional movement pattern.   As sports massage therapists, our goal is to help you through your injury to decrease the recovery time and help prevent further injuries from happening.

Should I wait before or after intense exercise to receive a massage?

Save your bodywork for after your workout. After a massage, we recommend you wait about 24 hours before engaging in vigorous exercise, such as running or weight training. Exercising too soon after a massage session may impair recovery from the massage, increase soreness and inhibit the effectiveness of the soft tissue work performed during your massage.

What are the different types of massage that you offer?

Optimal Function & Wellness therapists customize each massage depending on your needs and help you develop a plan of action to get you back to living your life pain free.  We are trained in over 10 modalities, or massage techniques, and we combine these techniques to provide the right type of massage to each client. Please see our (LINK)Treatments page(/LINK) for more information.

What if I have to cancel my appointment?

If you need to cancel your appointment, please call Optimal Function & Wellness as soon as possible.  If at least 24 hours of notice is provided, we are happy to change or cancel your appointment with no penalties.

If you have to change your appointment within 24 hours before your scheduled arrival, we maintain a firm policy of charging in full for the missed appointment.  This applies to appointments made same-day, as well. If you have an emergency, please let us know so that we can treat your specific situation with personal attention.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

  • Please be prepared to fill out a brief intake form detailing your physical health and history. You can also print and fill this out in advance.
  • If possible, bring some comfortable clothes (such as yoga pants, running shorts, etc) in the event that your therapist would like to do some active stretching or do an off-table range of motion assessment.
  • Spend the 24 hours prior to your massage drinking plenty of water to make sure your muscles are not dehydrated. Receiving a massage dehydrated can make the experience very uncomfortable and leave your very sore after your session.
  • Set goals or an intention before each session. Before each session starts you have an opportunity to talk to your massage therapist about your intention for your massage. Make the most of this time by telling us exactly what you are trying to achieve through massage.

What will my first appointment be like?

Your first appointment will last 90 minutes and consist of a comprehensive set of assessments that will evaluate your current ranges of motion, asymmetries,  pain (if present), and movement patterns. A 60-minute treatment session relevant to the findings will follow the assessment. After the session you will be given a specific exercise prescription to help correct dysfunctional movement patterns.
